My career as activist started in High School in 1967 when the social movements were rising the struggle for social change. Was then when the repression started rising too, until the military coup in 1973. The dictatorships in my country last 12 years, but 30 years after, fear kept us from speak out to exercise democracy. We lived in hell all those years. People disappeared, were kidnapped, tortured, imprisoned with no right to talk to a judge, no trial or sentence. Meetings were illegal, more than three people together in the street were illegal, several books and writers and songs were illegal. Families were going from one military place to another looking for their sons. Grandmothers were looking for their kidnapped grand kids. Part of the “Plan Condor” was to kidnap babies from activists and place them in military, police or conservative families. We learned how to read between the lines in order to survive. I have been active in Worcester community all these years trying to give my time and energy. One of the organizations where I have been working is Worcester Immigrant Coalition
I am member of WIC since 2006, when the organization started. We have been working to speak out the immigrant community’s issues like a comprehensive Immigration law, Worcester Sanctuary City, a common ID for all residents, access to a driver’s license, universal health care, and right to vote in the municipal election for all residents. We worked in a Rapid Response Network, an emergency phone tree and “Know you Rights” trainings.
After a period of time as coordinator of WT, I found this opportunity to work for the city that I call home. My office is in the room 100, first floor, which is in the way from the front door to the back door, close to the public bathrooms. I share the room with Caroline, the MACD employee and we decided to leave the door open because is more welcoming to the public that we serve. But we have an interesting situation where people go to our office for the weirdest reasons. Trying to change diapers, asking for a bandage in their nose, complaining that a couple is having sex in the ladies room. We have a continuous transit of homeless who use the corridor as a passage from Main St. to the common but also the free access to bathrooms water and telephones.
Eighty per cent of my job is working in the Worcester Fair Housing Project which is a join between the city and LACCM. I am the Housing Discrimination Intake Worker. My work consists in three different areas:
1) Receiving Individual complains. Walk in, phone calls, asking for appointments. I heard the problem, compile information and look for ways to help
2) Outreach. I have been going to markets like compare food, Hispanic, African and Brazilian business. Also to agencies like Pernet Family, Centro Las Americas, and radio shows.
3) Presentations. I had a presentation at Friendly House and I am working in several more in different agencies. Education in fair housing issues is very important. Agencies’ staff can understand when client are experimenting discrimination and refer them to my office. In the other hand educational workshops prevent discrimination and make people recognize it.

Migrate is a Human Right
On 10 December 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, whose 13th Articles says that: (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country. My point is that humans are more important than flags or boundaries. No matter where you were born, you should be protected by this universal declaration.
This agreement between all the countries around the world is violated regularly. You can see this example took from one of the nation that signed: the transportation company where a family had been working for 10 years suddenly broke. This family had a new born boy who motivated them to keep looking for a new job until their unemployment expired. Unable to find a way to feed their family they decided to emigrate. The only country, where they had already some friends living, didn’t allow them to get a visa. Without other option they moved close to the border and smuggled in. They easily found jobs and started a new life. In spite of living a hard life with very limited rights, they still where very thankful because they had an honest way to survive. The father died when the boy was 16th years old. He was a very good student who suddenly found himself with not right to go to college, no right to have a legal job, no right to drive. With 18th years old, he is unable to have a normal life, unable to go back to a county that he doesn’t know, and where he has not relatives or friend, also with a language that he doesn’t read or write. He is truly trapped in a nonsense situation. His father died without seen again his family, and his mother have been working two and three jobs in order to pay their live, missing her parents who are still alive, hoping to meet them again before they died. This is a picture that you can find in almost any place in the world. Immigration is a global issue. The 21th century found the humanity moving from countries to countries all over the world. Some people have disasters, wars, and political repression that obligate people to take refuge in others nations. But most of the migrations are due to economical reasons. They leave their culture, and their families to provide a safer, more prosperous future for their children, even when they face risks of human rights abuses. I am questioning the people that feel that place of born give them the right to ban others from their boundaries, how far they would go in order to feed their families.
All the species in the planet migrate as a way to find new resources to survive, included humans. Going back to biblical times we have many examples, like the one of Jose, who migrated to Egypt with his family in times of hunger. They were discriminated and used as slaves when their population grows to a point when Egyptians felt uncomfortable with the outsiders with different religion, language and costumes. But govern didn’t want to allow Israelites to leave because they were very dependant of their workers. Isn’t this situation similar to the one in our countries?
At this moment there is no place in the world without immigrants. Look at Dominican Republic as an example. This country has a huge amount of their population living abroad, but also receives thousands of immigrants from Haiti. And look at Puerto Rico that send thousands yearly to US and receive thousand from Dominican Republic. Similar situation is repeated in South America, Asia and Africa. This is not a US problem, it is a global problem. Some countries are more welcoming than others, some have strict rules and some don't, but the same kind of behavior is repeated all over the world. New arrivers are also blamed for lack of jobs, economy down turn and violence.
The system that allows goods to go freely every place, restricts people to cross the same border. Globalization made economies been interconnected in some way that nobody can escape from this influence. There are no govern that can control the global economy right now. Large corporations move their business from one country to another in ways that are better for them, not for people. Profit and greed are the only goal for them. Usually the capital move from one country to other, when corporations need natural resources or cheap labor. They have been using the immigrants as a source of cheap, dismissible labor force.
Opponents argue that immigrants accept to be underpaid, but if everyone who lives in the country has the same right, there would not be workers in such condition. To have people undocumented allow companies to exploit them, and regulate the job market. Also it is used to divide workers and make more difficult for them to struggle for their rights, looking each other as enemies. Opponents also argue that outsiders take their jobs but the truth is that if immigrants are hard workers, they are also consumers that boost the economy.
Talking from American point of view, four hundred years ago, the foundation of this country was made by illegal immigrants. Because native people didn’t have law enforcement and didn’t have the property concept, it doesn’t mean that European had the right to settle. They were fleeing from oppression, religious persecution and hunger, just like immigrants do today. Some opponents say that this is an especial situation, Hispanic from south are invading US territory. Let me tell you that along the centuries different nationalities came in all the ways that you can imagine, just like immigrants in 17th, 18th and 19th century. Drink a cup of coffee, they say, and read what we have researched about this dangerous smugglers that come to take our jobs, put in risk our health care system and education. This cup of coffee is one of the reasons that obligate them to smuggler. Farmers who use to make their living growing coffee trees have been displaced for American corporations who made timbers from the big trees under what the coffee trees used to grow. The cheap cup of coffee that they are sipping while they are complaining made poor immigrants move to a place where they are discriminated, exploited, and persecuted.
Half a century after signing the set of rules that the United Nation agree to respect, we are facing this flagrant violation of human rights. Instead of blaming big corporations that took jobs abroad, some people are blaming immigrants, whose only sin is struggle for a better life for their families. It is time for UN to take a step and review this declaration. But also for the global community to discuss this issue openly and work hard for changes. Most of the families don't want to leave their friends and culture; they want to be able to have the opportunity to provide for their kids. Undocumented workers around the world are making an action of civil resistance. Regulating big corporation business, not allowing them to move freely looking for cheap labor should be an important step.

Cheap labor

I got to believe that the person that one wants to live with matters most,i believe that you'll be a nice person,I just have my dressers, computer table, kitchen utensils and a queen size bed,2 big luggages and my car to be shipped....
I got a message that my uncle is sick in france and i have to go see him but i am making plans to secure place so that when i come back i'll just move in into the place we are talking about. and with the way we ve communicated,I am okay with you and i want you to know that i don't want to make any travel plans without securing a place down now,I will be signing a year lease for the start if you are okay with that,so i ve let my uncle understand more about you and the place,He is really comfortable and he told me that it is a nice area he had lived in the states before and he said that i should not afford to loose your place also he said that i should try and make sure that i hold down the place,so i thought of it and i will be making payment to hold down the place and the mode of payment will be the Most acceptable, easier, safer and reliable means of payment which is United State Certified money order so pls let me know if this mode of payment is ok by you.
And if YES pls provide me with the following information to get the payment to you.Your full name as it will appear on the payment, your work place address to ensure delivery in your hands through regular mails or a courier service, your phone number on the package to avoid package missing in transit.I will prefer to send to your work address because you will always be available at work from morning till evening but if home address it will be sitting in your mail and no one will be at home to receive the package. And if you don't receive package at your office address then I guess your home address will be good for the delivery right ? But to avoid any delay of you receiving at home then I guess any address will be fine as long as you will be able to receive it.
Kindly get back to me with this requested address contact information so that we can proceed asap bye for now.. I guess i'll feel more comfortable paying ahead now,I just dont want to loose the place.
Feel free to ask me any question(s) you have okay
merci

bon jour,
Thanks once again for the quick reply,I would have loved to call You but am leaving now to see my sick uncle ,i can only communicate through email but I will, whenever i get there but before that i will want to secure the place,I am very happy meeting a person like you,It 's nice reading from you again and i will never ever want to loose the room even without seeing the place ,i smell the kind of person whom you are and i like you,I will want You to know that i am okay with the cost ,if none is included again.....
